Dear Brothers and Sisters, As of November 4th gets closer, it is important that we of Organized Labor remember how critical the upcoming elections are to the working people of America. Looking at just two important issues, the lack of health care for 48 million Americans and the Employee Free Choice Act strongly shows the need to elect the national ticket of Barack Obama and Joe Biden. If we are successful in seeing that Barack Obama and Joe Biden take office in January 2009, they will require a supporting staff of congressional allies. We must elect represent ivies that will take a firm stand in support of issues important to working people. Electing Rick Noriega to the U.S. Senate would give Texas union families a much needed friend in Washington D.C. Guaranteeing fairness in our judicial system and ensuring a state government that is representative of the working people of Texas makes it equally as important to support AFL-CIO endorsed candidates in judicial races and state legislative contests. Our support is also required in county level races. Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez has been a strong friend of working men and women. We have the opportunity to retain her as the county's top law enforcement officer.
Support Public TransitProtect Your Job and Strengthen Your Union - Fight Back Against High Gas Prices The high cost of fuel has been a double-edged sword for the transit industry. While ridership has surged, transit agencies, which are running at capacity, are also being squeezed by the increased cost of diesel fuel. With a massive number of commuters switching from driving to transit as the price of gasoline climbs towards five dollars per gallon, and perhaps beyond, transit service should be expanding and ATU membership should be growing in size as a result. However, the opposite is happening. Due to the increased price of diesel fuel, layoffs and service cuts are occurring at transit systems throughout the United States. ATU members can help turn this situation around by urging their U.S. Senators to pass legislation that would provide fuel subsidies to transit agencies. We must act fast! The Senate will only be in session for a limited number of days between now and the end of the year.
